Jr. System Administrator -  Site Reliability Engineering - New York, NY

Livestream is an innovative and fast growing live video start-up based in New York which delivers over a billion minutes of video per month.

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about building the tools that power major infrastructures, take pride in what they build, are quick learners and love to work in a challenging and fast-paced environment. As part of a start-up competing in a world-scale market, you will be expected to work hard and will have the ability to manage services used by millions of people.

The ideal candidate will have experience in system administration, with a focus on web operations and using monitoring, automation, and management tools.  They will be part of a team of System Administrators that help to build and maintain the Livestream infrastructure, and will understand and believe the philosophy that anything that is worth doing multiple times is worth automating away.

Responsibilities:

  • Shift-based work with on-call rotation.
  • Follow regular operational procedures and complete all assigned tasks during the shift.
  • Maintain 100% uptime of Livestream platform.
  • Install, configure, troubleshoot and monitor Livestream platform applications and infrastructure it runs on.
  • Follow escalation process through issue resolution, including providing documentation as to the solution and suggesting improvements to avoid future issues.
  • Help to continuously improve our processes and tools to ensure the best possible experience for our users, from uptime to performance and reliability.
  • Ensure that our monitoring tools catch and alert on all production issues without generating a flood of false positives.
  • Monitor backups and disaster recovery, including backup verification and performing restoration tests and participating in disaster recovery drills.
  • Build our knowledge base by creating and updating documentation. 
  • Build and maintain automation systems to reduce time for builds and deployments and to enable the team to scale its output exponentially over time.

Requirements:

  • Experience using and administering Linux from command line on physical, virtual and cloud servers.
  • Experience with scripting utilizing shell, perl, python, ruby or equivalent languages.
  • Experience using monitoring and graphing systems such as Nagios, Zenoss, Mrtg, Cacti, Graphite.
  • Basic understanding of Internet, data center management, local area networks, and serving static, dynamic  and streaming content over the web.
  • Conceptual knowledge of DNS, DHCP, PXE, bare-metal virtualization ( Xen and KVM) and database management.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environments with daily release schedules.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or its equivalent work experience.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Experience supporting a real-time, 24x7 production web environment, preferably in a context of an ISP or a web hosting company.
  • Experience managing MySQL and Redis.
  • Experience using configuration management systems (chef, puppet, cfengine, etc.) and package management (dpkg, yum).
  • Experience managing the following technologies or equivalents: DNS, LDAP, DHCP, FAI, git, puppet, redis, mysql.
